On the drag strip and in the classroom, Team Sycamore Racing’s newest dragster will benefit the racing experience as well as increase student learning about racecar engineering technology at Indiana State University.

Moser Engineering, a Portland, Ind.-based company that makes rear-end components for racing applications, donated the vehicle, a 2002 Undercover dragster. Moser employs Indiana State alumni.

Dr. Randy Peters

“This is a cool time for us,” said Randy Peters, associate professor in the department of applied engineering and technology management within the College of Technology. Peters also serves as team principal of Team Sycamore Racing.

Team Sycamore Racing launched in 2007 as a student organization providing hands-on learning opportunities about both the sport and business sides of auto racing.

Moser first noticed the student-led race team in 2008, its first season on the track, Peters said. The company expressed its support and earlier this year replaced the rear-end component for the team’s original dragster, a 1991 Spitzer.

Rob Moser- Moser Engineering

Two weeks later, Rob Moser, president of Moser Engineering called to offer a turn-key 235″ rear-engine dragster.

“I said something along the lines of ‘absolutely’,” Peters said.

The vehicle has a patriotic theme, emblazoned with the American flag and a bald eagle decal on the side. It is a swing-arm style chassis with a 488 cubic inch General Motors big-block carbureted engine, setting it apart from the original’s hard-tailed design and 427 cubic inch small-block fuel-injected engine.

“Both the swing arm chassis and the carbureted engine are the industry standards and should give the students even more knowledge when it comes to learning all about the drag racing industry,” said Jeff Anderson, marketing director for Moser.

Automotive engineering technology students will compare and contrast the features of both vehicles, with the differing features providing a variety of learning experiences.

ISU is the only public university in the state with a motorsport management minor program, in which all Team Sycamore Racing members are required to be enrolled. Founded in 2006 as a collaboration between the Colleges of Business, Technology and Nursing, Health and Human Services, it has since expanded to encompass the remaining two colleges, said Joyce Young, director of the motorsports program.

Fifty students are currently in the program, up from 16 the first year.

“We now have students who are choosing to come to Indiana State University because of the minor,” Young said.

Sponsors see a benefit to associating with racers at an early age.

Anderson said his company wants to make a lasting impression on those students.

“We feel that by connecting and introducing ourselves early we can forge a connection that will help us to remain in the students mind moving forward so that they remember Moser Engineering as an early partner that they will hopefully want to work with in the future,” he said.

MARTIN, Mich. — (August 14, 2010) Talk about timing…

If a racer could pick where and when to get their first national event win then this was one of Rob Moser’s first choices. Moser Engineering puts up the money for the largest paying sportsman event around at Axle Mania every year. Rob was competing in the Top Dragster Class at the IHRA Nitro Jam this year while also over seeing the exciting and one-of-a-kind Axle Mania program. The weekend turned out being rewarding in so many ways. Robs Top Dragster performed flawlessly and helped him to bring home his first national event win along with an Iron Man trophy. Racers can go there entire careers without winning a national event and for Rob to do it in only his first season of racing in the top dragster class shows what the team is capable of accomplishing.

Rob started the weekend qualifying 15th and then began a slow methodical attack on the field as the weekend progressed. He defeated Kevin Fisher, Martin Chappo, Pascal Lecompte and Don Restauri Jr. He then went to the final round to face Chris Smith. They were only two thousandths apart on the tree and Moser ran closer to his dial-in to take the title. Robs margin of victrory: 0.0303 seconds (approximately 10 feet).

This means so much to the organization and is a victory that will hopefully be followed by many more. What started out with Rob Moser getting ready to hand out a check for $22,500 to the winner of Axle Mania ended with him walking away with an Iron Man trophy and a national win.

Just four months ago Bo Upton was just another ordinary racer with a dream and a racecar.

Upton loved to race, but knew he didn’t have the means to chase a championship. Upton loved to win, but knew that his hobby would never be much more than that.

Now, two big wins and $32,500 later, Upton is a prime example of just what can happen when a person doesn’t give up on a dream and continues to chase after the things that matter most.

Upton, already with one big win in his pocket this year and a World Championship to go with it, continued his run of IHRA’s crown jewel events with a victory in the Moser Engineering Axle-Mania Sportsman Showdown during the Northern Nitro Jam event at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park Saturday in Martin, Mich.

Moser Axle Mania Final 2010

Upton hauled his car all the way from South Carolina to be a part of this weekend’s big event and walks away $22,500 richer for his troubles, taking down many of the best drivers in the business along the way to claim his second big win of the season.

“This means the world to me. To have the opportunity to come out and get to run for $22,500 in a five round race is incredible. These guys at Moser are a quality act,” Upton said. “We towed 14 hours to get here and to have it pay off like this is a dream come true. What an amazing weekend and what an amazing season. We truly feel blessed to get to do what we do and be a part of such an amazing program.”

Placing 32 of the best drivers from around the country on a ladder regardless of class with the winner taking home their share of the $51,000 purse generously put up by Moser, the Moser Axle-Mania Sportsman Showdown is one of the biggest events on the sportsman calendar each year and big part of each Nitro Jam that has been lucky enough to host this prestigious event.

Bo gets the Big Check!

Now Upton can add his name to the list of drivers that have hoisted the unique trophy presented by Moser and the check declaring him the winner of one of the biggest races of the year.

“This is the biggest weekend for us from a racing standpoint,” said Rob Moser, president of Moser Engineering. “To get together 32 of the best sportsman drivers in the country is a pretty amazing feat and this event, with the help of the IHRA, went off great as it always does.

“What can I say about Bo? Bo has been in this shootout before and has never been able to get it going. He certainly changed that this weekend.”

Along with the big win this weekend in the Moser Axle-Mania Showdown, Upton also claimed a win in the Tournament of Champions back in April to take home another big prize and the title of World Champion in the Quick Rod class.

Bo Upton

Now, after Saturday’s win, Upton can say that he is not only a champion in Quick Rod, but one of the best regardless of class.

“I have never chased points or a championship before, I just couldn’t do it. Now the IHRA has stepped up and made it possible to be a champion by proving it on the track and stuff like that carries over to a big program like the Moser deal and it makes for a lot of fun opportunities for sportsman racers in the IHRA,” Upton said. “And for me to win both of these things in the same year is simply unbelievable. You have to be lucky in this business to get a win and I feel very fortunate to have won the events I have won this year.”

With $22,500 on the line, Upton defeated Stock racer Myron Piatek in the final, running a 4.662 on a 4.64 dial in the eighth-mile final. Piatek was just off his mark with a 7.296 on a 7.30 dial.

Upton defeated Piatek, David Elrod, Gilmer Hinshaw, Allen Constantine and Stuart Smith on his way to picking up the richest payout in Nitro Jam competition. Upton did it all from the Quick Rod category.

Piatek defeated Brandon Peterson, Brian Folk, Nick Folk and Terry Taylor on his way to a runner-up finish.

Myron Piatek

“Me and a buddy of mine made the haul up here splitting driving time. I just knew that if I am going to make the trip I am not leaving anything on the track,” Upton said. “Thankfully we didn’t really run into any issues this weekend. I had to get back in the groove today because my driving was not up to par today like it was yesterday, but I was able to regroup and focus. You definitely don’t want to tow 14 hours and not show up on the track.”

Immediately following his big win Upton rushed to call his father and family who were unable to make the trip to Martin.

“I can’t wait to call my wife and my dad. My dad travels everywhere with me and was with me when I won at Rockingham earlier this year. He just can’t ride long trips like this,” Upton said. “But I know he is sitting at home by the phone just waiting for me to call.”

Upton also wanted to thank Moser for everything they have done to put on this exciting and one-of-a-kind program.

“They really don’t know what a program like this means to the racers. It is huge just to get to come race for the money so you can imagine how big winning this thing is,” Upton said. “I hope the IHRA and Moser continue to offer this awesome race. It was a ton of fun and I look forward to possibly coming back and defending my win next year.”

Adding to the excitement this weekend is the fact that the entire Moser family was on hand to witness Upton’s win and be a part of the race itself. Nearly everyone in the Moser family competed in this weekend’s event with Rob Moser actually coming out on top in the Top Dragster category Saturday afternoon.

So with another big payday and big win in his pocket, what are Upton’s plans for an encore?

“Well, I really don’t know. I mean, how do you top what we have done so far this year,” Upton said. “Who knows, maybe I will just retire. My boy wants to go junior racing so who knows. Maybe I will just retire on a high note and go junior racing with my boy.”

Moser equipped driver Peter Biondo continues his sizzlin’ summer hot streak with a dominating performance at arguably one of the biggest and toughest bracket races of the year. The pits at Atco Raceway were swarmed with over 200 of the most talented drivers in the country all coming for a shot at three days of racing and $25,000 to win each day. As day one came to an end, Biondo came up only one round short of taking it all. “It was bittersweet; I was happy to make it to the final round with such a talented field of racers but in the final, when the win light comes on in the other lane, that tends to sting a bit” said Peter. Despite losing the final, Peter ended up with $12,000 for his efforts and 2 more days of action to try to turn his final round performance into a win. After falling in the early rounds on day 2 of the event, Biondo ‘one upped’ is Friday performance by taking home the big $25,000 check on Sunday. “Without a doubt, the biggest win of the year for me. My dragster is equipped with all Moser products throughout and was within thousandths of a second all day long. No doubt this played a big role in the win” said Peter. No doubt a weekend for the record books for the versatile driver most refer to as ‘The Terminator’.

Amid all the flashy show elements and high-stakes nitro racing that will be featured at this year’s Northern Nitro Jam at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park lies the real reason that Martin, Michigan’s annual summer tradition holds a special place in the hearts of fans and drivers – the Moser Engineering Axle-Mania Sportsman Showdown.

Easily the richest sportsman race of the year, the Moser Axle-Mania competition pits 32 of the best sportsman racers in the country against one another in an inter-class battle for a share of the $51,000 purse generously offered by the people at Moser Engineering. Of that purse the winner will walk away with the single largest payday of the year, a hefty $22,500 for just five rounds of work.

2009 participants

“The Moser Engineering Axle-Mania program is one of the most anticipated sportsman events of the summer. These are some of the best racers in the country and, unlike other racing programs where there are multiple winners, there will be only one winner at the end of the night in Michigan,” said Skooter Peaco, VP of Race Operations. “That gives these guys extra incentive to put fourth their best effort to be the last man standing in front of the huge Saturday crowd. That and the $22,500 that is at stake. It is one heck of a race and one heck of a show.”

Featuring racers from all seven IHRA classes and one wild card group, the Moser Engineering Axle-Mania Sportsman Showdown places racers from multiple divisions and classes together on a single ladder with the winner walking away with the top prize of $22,500 during Saturday’s “Night of Fire” at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park.

Always a huge part of the summer schedule, this season marks the ninth year for this prestigious event as a part of the Nitro Jam tour.

Moser Engineering has a strong presence in the IHRA

To be eligible a racer must run a set of Moser axles and have the proper Moser Axle-Mania decals on their car. All IHRA drivers on the Summit Racing Equipment Pro-Am Tour who meet the eligibility requirements will have the opportunity to qualify for the $51,000 purse. From that group of eligible drivers the top four racers in each of IHRA’s seven sportsman classes plus the “wild card” group will comprise the 32-car field.

Points are accumulated at Summit Pro-Am races throughout the season.

Once the field is set the participants will compete throughout the weekend during the pro rounds of the Northern Nitro Jam. The Moser Axle-Mania will be run with a full tree on an eighth-mile standard.

Moser Engineering has a strong presence in the IHRA

“One of the best parts about this unique format is that this is the only time during the season where drivers from every class compete against each other. It’s very cool to watch a Stock racer against a Top Sportsman racer,” Peaco added. “Add in the element of the 1/8th mile format for this event and just about anything can happen.”

Bruce Thrift, last season’s winner, is one of those drivers that got a taste of winning the richest purse of the season when he cruised to an easy victory over Scott Macy during the 2009 edition of the Moser Axle-Mania Showdown.

“This is the most awesome stuff in the world; especially the way times are right now. For them (Moser Engineering) to step up and give away $51,000 with the way the economy is it is amazing,” Thrift said following his victory last year. “They make you feel like you are just one of the family and that is what is so great about it all.”

2009 Winner Bruce Thrift

This year’s edition features three reigning champions and a collection of drivers with hundreds of wins logged over the course of their careers making for one of the toughest competitions yet. In round one the drivers will be matched up in their respective classes with the winner of each class and the wild card moving on until a winner is crowned.

Slate continues to win

Hammond, LA: When Slate Cummings made back-to-back NHRA National Event final round appearances in Super Stock (Winning in Houston, his first NHRA national crown, and taking runner-up honors in Atlanta), and added a semi-final finish at the Dallas Lucas Oil Division Series event, he made himself a serious contender in the race for the NHRA Lucas Oil Super Stock Championship. Up to that point, he had struggled in his second class, Stock Eliminator, fighting nagging transmission issues and general bad luck. His recent outings haven’t aided his cause in Super Stock: Cummings suffered early losses at the Houston and Tulsa LODRS events, and had mechanical issues at the Thunder Valley Nationals in Bristol, TN. His Moser Engineering backed Stock Eliminator Firebird, on the other hand, has begun to find its way to the winner circle repeatedly. Cummings’ began to find his feet in the Stock category three weeks ago at the IHRA Pro-Am event at Baton Rouge, where he won the Stock class in Sunday’s eliminator, his first win in nearly a year with that machine. He carried that momentum to the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals in Bristol, where he not only took the B/SA class honors on Friday, he went on to hoist his second NHRA National Event Wally after defeating Russell Johnson in the final round of the event. Then, just last weekend, he continued his mastery of the Stock category by claiming another Stock Eliminator victory at the NHRA LODRS event in Tulsa, OK. Suddenly, Cummings is now a major factor in the Lucas Oil Points standings in both Super Stock (where he is currently 3rd nationally) and Stock (where his recent surge has moved him into 7th position). “Winning is a great feeling, regardless of the class,” said Cummings. “We’ve struggled in NHRA competition for a few years, and a lot of people told me that once we got a few wins under our belts, the floodgates would open. I wasn’t sure I believed them, but it seems like it’s happened that way. This season has been great so far. We started off hot in Super Stock, but we had a lot of bad luck in Stock. The last month or so, the roles have reversed: I can’t seem to do anything wrong in Stock, but we can’t get a break in Super Stock. I don’t know how that will work out in terms of points. There’s still a lot of racing left to do, but I’m thrilled to put any Moser Engineering car in the winner circle.” Since Cummings Super Stock runner-up at the NHRA Southern Nationals in Atlanta back in May, the team traveled back home for the IHRA Pro-Am event in Baton Rouge. There, Slate and his father Larry Cummings had a rare opportunity to meet in the final round of Super Stock in the make-up event from a previous IHRA Pro-Am that was postponed due to rain. Larry showed that father does indeed know best, topping Slate to take home the hardware. Slate drove to another runner-up in the second make-up race of the weekend, while longtime family friend Burlin Taylor wheeled another Moser Engineering machine to runner-up honors in Stock Eliminator. Slate then capped the weekend with a victory in Stock, at the scheduled Baton Rouge event, which would prove to be the catalyst for his impending hot streak at the NHRA events in Bristol and Tulsa. In addition to his standing in NHRA points, Slate Cummings is also currently leading IHRA Division 4 points in Super Stock; just a few scant points ahead of father Larry Cummings. Slate also sits in second position in the Division 4 Stock category, following only Jacob Pitt. The Cummings team will continue their aggressive race schedule, with the goal of adding to their already impressive ledger of championships within both NHRA and IHRA in 2010. All Cummings team vehicles are backed by Moser Engineering, along with a host of associate marketing partners.

IHRA’s Stock classes produced another batch of incredibly tight races as Cummings (Hammond, La.) defeated David Simmons in Super Stock and Beard (Seagrove, N.C.) won over Brent Darrooch in Stock.

Cummings won his second career Super Stock championship with a perfect light leading to a 9.093 E.T. on a 9.07 dial. Simmons ran a 10.176 on a 10.16 in his runner-up effort.

“I had been very good on the tree all day and so was David so I knew I had to be good on the tree and not cut him any slack,” Cummings said. “I was set up for a perfect tree and that is where I left it. It feels really good. You look at the final eight of Bertozzi, Folk, Lyons – you have a bunch of champions who should be there.

“They were all there to win the world championship and they earned their spot there. To win against that group feels really good.”

Along with Simmons, Cummings also defeated Michael Lyons, Missy Phillips and Tracy Robbins in the opening rounds to win his first championship since 2004.

“This championship is great for my guys at Moser and my whole family. This is my anniversary weekend. Actually this weekend is keeping with a tradition in my family,” Cummings said. “My dad brought my mom to a race on their anniversary and he won and my brother and I did the same thing so we kept the tradition going. My wife has been telling me she is bad luck, but she was here for my world championship here today.”

Houston, TX: Congratulations to Slate Cummings and Familyand Team Moser on Slates first ever NHRA National Event win in Super Stock! Slate Cummings,In his Chevy Cavalier, ran an 8.979, 135.24 defeating Chris Chaney who ran an 9.681, 133.33.
Also congratulations to Britt and Slate on their semi final’s in T/D and S/C. The Bayou Boyz are on the move early this season and sem to be hitting on all cylinders.

Hammond, LA: The headline may come as a surprise to many: Jody Simoneaux wins first national event. The Louisiana based racer has been a standout competitor for years; first behind the wheel of various bottom bulb bracket machines, and in recent years as a member of the Cummings Motorsports team, flying the Moser Engineering colors in Stock Eliminator. Since teaming with the Cummings family, Simoneaux has enjoyed great success in the Stock Eliminator category. He’s won a handful of events at the divisional level. He was the NHRA Division 4 JEGS All-Stars representative last season, and he’s been a contender for the Division 4 Stock Championship in both NHRA and IHRA. But, a win on the national stage had proven elusive–until the IHRA Mardi Gras Nationals two weeks ago.

Simoneaux drove the Moser Engineering Chevy II for the Cummings family into the winner circle of nearby State Capital Dragway at the IHRA Mardi Gras Nationals. “Cool,” as he’s known by many for his laid back demeanor, posted his best run in the most crucial round of eliminations: using a telepathic .003 reaction time and dead-on 11.246 for a great .009 package in the final round. Touring professional competitor Mark Faul posted a respectable .010 reaction and 11.649 on his 11.63 target, but it simply wasn’t enough to deny Simoneaux his first national event win. Looking back, Simoneaux finished the event much like he started it: he opened in round one with a stellar .008 reaction time to defeat three-time Stock World Champion Kevin Helms. He then worked his way thru the Stock field, defeating Sam Lusco, Jr., Dempsey Pendarvis, and Danny Doughty before earning a bye run into the final round.

“We’re extremely happy for Cool,” stated Britt Cummings. “He does such a great job for our team, and for Moser; and I know he felt like this was a void on his resume. To win a national event, especially to make the runs that he made, and to do it close to home with our families and friends all here… It’s a big deal. We’re all so happy for Cool, and proud of him, and I know this is the first of many victory celebrations for him.”

Following their season-opening appearance at the Mardi Gras Nationals, team Cummings set out for the first IHRA Division 4 event of the season at Dallas Raceway in Texas. There, teammates Britt, Slate, and Larry Cummings each joined Simoneaux by putting several Moser team machines in the final rounds of competition. Former IHRA Quick Rod World Champion Britt Cummings enjoyed a spectacular Saturday, taking home the IHRA Iron Man in both Top Dragster and Quick Rod. Behind the wheel of his new Phantom Chassis Moser Engineering backed hot rod, he knocked off local standout Jackie Jones in the Top Dragster final. Moments later, he returned to the track in his Quick Rod machine, getting the best of perennial national standout and former world champion Brian Folk.

Not to be outdone, 2-time IHRA World Champion Slate Cummings, along with father and family patriarch Larry Cummings got into the act on Sunday as well. The father-son duo combined to make the Super Stock finale an all Moser affair, with son getting the better of father in this outing. Of note on his way to the finals, Slate Cummings won a stellar heads-up semi-final battle with Byron Latino. Cummings used a slight holeshot to hold off Latino by a scant .0006 seconds to get the victory!

Cummings Family Announces Schedule for Upcoming Season

Larry, Britt and Slate have announced their tentative schedule for the upcoming 2010 season. The Cummings Motorsports Team had another successful season in 2009. Brothers Britt and Slate Cummings along with family patriarch Larry Cummings, Jody Simoneaux and team partner Allen Constantine posted wins along the IHRA and NHRA sportsman racing tours.

In IHRA competition, the Moser backed team scored a pair of division titles. Britt Cummings earned the Division 4 Top Dragster crown and Jody Simoneaux took the top sport in Division 4 Stock Eliminator. The team also scored a trio of IHRA national event victories. Slate Cummings earned a double victory at the Mardi Gras Nationals and Larry Cummings took his first national event triumph at the Northern Nationals.

The Cummings Team will compete in the IHRA Tournament of Champions and JEGS All Stars in 2010

The Cummings Team also earned six spots in four categories at the IHRA Tournament of Champions event in 2010. Both Larry and Slate Cummings will compete in Super Stock, while Slate Cummings and Simoneaux earned bids in Stock Eliminator. Britt Cummings earned a seed in the Top Dragster runoff and Constantine will compete for the title in Quick Rod.

In NHRA competition, both Slate Cummings and Simoneaux earned the right to compete in the JEGS All-Stars competition in June 2010.

“We can’t look back and say this was a bad season,” said Britt Cummings. “We all had our moments. We are moving forward next year and hope to take our program to the next level. We’re a world championship caliber team, we’ve proven that in the past and anything short of that really does not meet our expectations.”

Britt Cummings is also looking forward to a full race schedule next year. He spent much of his time over the past few seasons at home with his wife who fought cancer. “The latest prognosis is good,” he said. “Our family life has resumed some degree of normalcy. We race as a family and when you’ve got a serious illness in the family it takes its toll on everyone. It’s behind us now and the future looks bright at home and on the track. We’re looking forward to getting back out in force and getting back to that championship level of competition.” The Cummings Team will also add a Phantom Chassis hot rod in Top Dragster competition to its stable of vehicles in 2010.

PETERSBURG, VA (May 18, 2010)—Candyce Marsh is no stranger to fast doorslammer racing.

Previously a competitor in Pro Nitrous at the prestigious ADRL Dragstock III at Rockingham Dragway in 2006, as well as several Sportsman classes, the Raleigh, North Carolina, native is preparing for her Extreme 10.5 (XTF) debut this weekend in the ADRL Speedtech U.S. Drags III at Virginia Motorsports Park (VMP).

“Wow, I am so excited to be getting back to the race track in competition,” she exclaims. “I am very thankful for the support and collaboration of my parents and Maurice Bea, my friend, crew chief and business partner for this event. It is great to have the long-term support of great companies like Moser Engineering, Mickey Thompson Tires and Cheeks Performance. Additionally, I am glad to introduce new companies like MoBea Solutions.”

It has taken several years of hard work for Marsh to return to ADRL competition. Working with a business development company she was able to secure associate sponsorship, but not yet a primary sponsor for 2010, which again threatened to put her plans on hold.

That was until Bea suggested: “You have the parts, pieces and support of your sponsors; let’s retrofit my outlaw Mustang and go Extreme 10.5 racing.”

“What a perfect idea,” Marsh recalls. “So 45 days later here we are. We are still working hard to secure a primary sponsorship for 2010, [but] this will allow us to race full time and competitively on the ADRL circuit. My business development team and I are speaking with several companies at this time.”

Marsh will take to the VMP eighth mile in Bea’s 1998 ‘Stang, built on a Tim McAmis Race Cars kit chassis with updates by Cheeks Performance and motivated by a “big,” nitrous-boosted Buck Racing Engines Hemi running through a Cheeks-built Powerglide transmission.

Also significant is the team utilizing a Moser M9 Full Floater Drag Housing for the first time in ADRL competition. After extensive testing, local racing and wonderful results, Marsh and Bea feel the Moser M9 is ready for the rigors of ADRL Extreme 10.5 and invite racers and fans alike to come by and see the Moser M9 in action.

“Moser Engineering is known for world-class products and the M9 Floater is just that,” Bea states.

“Additionally, Moser has a Moser Full Floater Assembly Kit that converts an existing housing to a full floater. We are pleased with the results of the M9 and would recommend it to any competitors in Extreme 10.5. It provides the safety needed at a cost-effective price point.”

On a personal note, Marsh enters this weekend’s race in honor of O’Prentiss Ball.

“It is a great honor to be able to compete on a national platform for Prentiss and the entire Bea family,” she says. “Prentiss was such a likeable young man with a contagious and welcoming personality. He loved drag racing! I am thankful that we will be able to do this in his memory.”

Always with high expectations of success, Marsh thinks no matter what the outcome at VMP this weekend, it will represent a victory for herself and her team
