After a breakout season in the NMRA’s Super Stang class in 2012, where he finished the year on top as the class Champion, Chad Wendel has continued putting solid performances on the board so far in 2013. Despite a second-round breakout loss at the Florida event, the Moser Engineering-sponsored racer has continued to hone his skills. He didn’t fare terribly well in Atlanta at the second event, going out in the first round at the hands of Marvin Knack on another breakout, but he had a great showing at the most recent event this past weekend at Maryland International Raceway in Mechanicsville, Maryland. 

In order to make it to the final round there, he was the lucky recipient of a single pass in the randomly-paired class in the first round, which allowed him to take a shot at the tree. He became the top qualifier with a stout .015 reaction time after the first round, then proceeded to saw his way through the competition on Sunday, where he finally fell in the final round at the hands of longtime class competitor Pete Espeut in a hard-fought battle. Other opponents to fall by the wayside on the day were the notoriously-hard-to-beat Joe Cram, where Wendel ran an 11.998 on a .97 dial-in, and David Leichty, who took the loss in a double-breakout race.

Super Stang is one of the more difficult classes of competition in the NMRA with more than 20 cars regularly appearing, and rules that allow you to dial your own ET on Sunday prior to eliminations. That dial must stay the same throughout the day, providing an extra layer of challenge to the racers. Wendel has proven to be one of the more proficient at this challenge, but it’s still anyone’s game come race day. His choice of mount is a naturally-aspirated 2007 Mustang GT that features a full suspension from BMR and a number of other touches to achieve the ET’s. Wendel has been racing for over 25 years and started out with a Fox Body Mustang like so many of us before switching to the current ride.

Div 4 Sportsman Shootout Winner

Jody has started off the season strong and his skill as a driver was showing this weekend with consistent reaction times and a  deadly accurate car. The JEGS Cajun NHRA SPORTSnationals at No Problem Raceway, March 22-24 will be the inaugural South Central Division Moser Sportsman Shootout. 

The Moser Sportsman Shootout is unique in that racers from the seven entirely different class structures will be racing each other. Eliminations will be in a dial-in/breakout handicap racing format on the eighth-mile. The Christmas tree will be a full countdown mode with the Cross Talk feature not in use.

A $15,000 cash purse is up for grabs with $5,000 to the winner, $2,000 to the runner-up, $1,000 to each of the semi-finalists, $700 to the quarter-finalists and $400 to each of the remaining event qualifiers.

To be eligible for full posted purse qualifier must run the NHRA Moser Engineering Sportsman program decal and Moser Engineering axles and display the Moser Engineering product decal during the Sportsman Shootout Event. Qualifiers not utilizing Moser Engineering axles and displaying the Moser Engineering Sportsman Shootout program decal and Moser Engineering product decal for the duration of the Moser Sportsman Shootout event will receive 50% of the posted awards. Drivers are not required to have Moser Engineering axles to qualify or participate in the program.

Product use and proper decal display from tech inspection to completion of the Shootout by the competitor is required for full payout. The NHRA Certification Team will be responsible for product and decal verification at the Moser Sportsman Shootout.

The Summit SuperSeries presented by AMSOIL and Moser Engineering prize dragsters awarded to the winners of the Top ET and Junior Dragster champions at this weekend’s IHRA Summit Racing Equipment World Finals are loaded up and ready to go.

But before the two machines make the trip to Memphis International Raceway and get handed out, we got a sneak peak at the two dragsters in the parking lot at the IHRA World Headquarters in Norwalk, Ohio. Both dragsters feature the unique Summit Racing Equipment blue and red design with reverse colors on both sides.

The Top ET prize dragster was built by American Race Cars and features a Trick Flow engine with major contributions from Summit Racing Equipment, Moser Engineering, Abruzzi Transmissions and Converters and many more. The Junior Dragster prize machine was built by Vic Puglia and features a Steve Waller engine with many fine companies helping make both possible.

The IHRA Summit Racing Equipment World Finals are this Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Memphis International Raceway. Competition in the Summit SuperSeries will take place Saturday evening.

And they are not alone.

Already this year multiple drivers including Aaron Brock and Pageland Dragway from Division 2 East, Dion Degnitz and Dan Farrell both from Wisconsin International Raceway from Division 5 and Brian Barby and Eagle Motorplex from Division 6 have all taken advantage of the incredible Moser contingency program.

Simply put if a driver wins his or her Summit SuperSeries runoff at their Summit Team Finals event while running a set of Moser axles and displaying the required Moser decal, both the racer and the track that the racer calls home will receive $500 apiece from Moser Engineering. Each Summit Team Finals runner-up running a set of Moser axles and decal will receive $250 apiece.

That payout will continue at the Summit SuperSeries World Championship at Memphis International Raceway where both the Top and Mod champion and their home track will receive $500 if they run a set of Moser axles and decal.

Bureski 2012 div 3 winner Moser Shootout

Daryl Bureski took home top honors today as he won the Inaugural NHRA Moser Sportsman Shootout at the JEGS NHRA Northern SPORTSnationals at National Trial Raceway.

The Elgin, Ill., racer worked his way through the 16-car field recording a .007 reaction time in round 2 followed by a run of 7.158 seconds on the 7.15 dial to take out Dan Olding in the semifinals and advance to the final round against James Monroe. Bureski was on his game in the final as well running 7.149 on the 7.14 dial for the win. Monroe, who runs in the Top Dragster class had to give Bureski and his ’70 Oldsmobile Stock Eliminator a three second head start on the dial and broke out by .001 second trying to run him down.

Bureski picked up $2,500 from Moser for his win along with the inaugural Moser Sportsman Shootout event trophy.

With Mother Nature causing some changes in today’s schedule, Comp Eliminator, Top Sportsman and Top Dragster will have a final qualifying session on Sunday morning beginning at 11 a.m. which will also include the first round of the JEGS Top Dragster Shootout. A special awards ceremony will take place at 12:30 p.m. Gates open at 7 a.m. with racing set to start at 8 a.m.

Jason Coan remains on top in Comp eliminator with an 8.128 second lap in his ’32 roadster. Wes Leopold jump to the top in Super Stock with his ’05 Stratus running 8.481 seconds, -1.119 under the index and Jim Marshall is low in Stock out of Indian Land, S.C. Marshall went 1.164 under the index clocking in at 12.886.

In the Brodix/Steve Schmidt Top Sportsman class it was Lester Johnson who will take the No. 1 spot into Sunday with a 6.609 second run at 213.23 mph. Scott Wildgust, Wartburg, Ont., leads the Spitzer Top Dragster contingent at 6.093, 226.01 followed by Dan Norris, Wixom, Mich.
